Portraits are painted from photographs. When possible, a joint photographic session is preferred. It enables the artist and client together to review a range of photographs and help the client to choose the most attractive. Often, more than 50 photographs are needed to provide a handful of good shots from which the client may choose. The artist typically uses several different photographs to ensure that the dog's features and coloring are accurately captured in the portrait. In addition, a joint session provides an opportunity for the artist and client to select the color to be used in painting the background for the portrait.
Photographs provided by the client should be supplied either in digital form (.jpg file, minimum 300 dpi) or in letter size prints (8.5 X 11 inches). Photographs should be taken outdoors in natural daylight with the camera at the same level as the dog's head. Care should be taken to ensure that the dog's unique features, especially the eyes, are clearly visible. Generally, the most successful photographs are those that capture a pose and expression that the dog's owner will recognize as characteristic of the dog.
